Role Overview

This position will serve as a Traffic Intern for the Technical Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to the Vincennes District traffic engineer.

 

Hourly Rate:

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Convert field data such as signs, official actions, or speeds to spatial databases 
  • Collect field data as needed and work with field investigations teams to determine what data is pertinent to be stored online 
  • Use existing GIS layers to find potential safety and mobility improvements 
  • Work with other divisions such as district pavement engineering to find where potential safety/mobility projects may be implemented into other roadway projects

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Working towards a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, or related field 
  • Relevant work experience preferred 
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT 
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations 
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process 
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports 
  • Analytical skills 
  • Ability to handle multiple projects 
  • Ability to operate computer tools 
  • Good research and writing skills 
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts 
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances 

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
